Athensmade returns to Creature Comforts Brewery on July 26th with its second installment of The Social Lab. This media management lecture series features speakers discussing the latest hacks, tips and trends of today’s ever-growing social media and marketing landscape.
Sons of Sawdust Co-Founder and Creative Director, Shayna Hobbs, opened the series to a crowd of 100 Athenians on June 28th with a discussion of the local wood-rescuers’ overwhelming success with Instagram. Sons of Sawdust’s 131,000+ followers hang on Shayna’s every image – the photos like an eye into the fascinating interworkings of a rapidly growing business that has captured sponsorships from Carhart & Ridgid. The title of this month’s Lab is “Brand: You. A Guide to Personal Branding.”
The term branding has long since been attached to companies. Amazon; Google; McDonald’s; American Red Cross; Banana Republic; Netflix; Apple: All of these are big name, international companies. And then there’s those brands that are close to home: Georgia Bulldogs & UGA; Flagpole; The Varsity; REM; Terrapin, 40 Watt and so on. For all of us, the international brands are easy to picture. It is likely you drew a mental picture of their logo or some popular product at the brief mention of their names. For Athenians, our local brands tug at a special place in our hearts. We know what these companies do. What they stand for. What they mean to our community.
But branding is emerging as not only a pillar of company and product marketing, but as a way in which to extinguish oneself from everyone else. Almost every individual has a personal brand whether they know it or not. And because how others see us is fundamental to our professional and personal success, our personal brand should be one that is purposefully and deliberately crafted and marketed. Tacked onto social media profiles, résumés, and adopted as a holistic approach to community engagement, personal branding can be a powerful tool.
“Brand: You” will feature Alice P. Stapleton, Director of Training in Economic Development at Athens Technical College. In addition to an extensive instruction and training background, Alice is the owner of a successful boutique marketing firm which caters to small, luxe labels that define communities like Destin, Miramar Beach, the beach enclaves of Florida’s 30A: Homeowner’s Collection, Sandestin®, Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club, Vue on 30a, Destin Charity Wine Auction, South Walton Beaches Wine & Food Festival, and Harborwalk Village - to name just a few. Her company has also supported dozens of nonprofit organizations of all sizes in every corner of the world. Other sessions of the Social Lab will focus on popular outlets such as Facebook and Twitter as well as emerging media trends like podcasting.
